On Thursday 12 February 2026, the 5th edition of the International Bike & hike Tourism Conference (IBTC) took place in conference center Domstad, Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Eighty professionals from 11 European countries attended this successful edition, choosing from two keynote sessions, seven breakout sessions, and several interactive discussion groups. For destination managers, policymakers, bloggers, tour operators, route developers, and tourism entrepreneurs, the event provided a valuable platform to connect, exchange expertise, and explore best practices and fresh insights in the field of active tourism.
The following day, participants also had the opportunity to visit the Fiets en Wandelbeurs, Europe’s largest consumer fair dedicated to cycling and hiking tourism.

For the 2026 edition, the chosen theme was “Rerouting Cycling & Hiking Tourism”. As outdoor recreation booms, many natural areas are feeling the strain – impacting both the environment and the visitor experience.
By reimagining and redrawing cycling and hiking routes, we can inspire travelers to step beyond well-trodden trails and into different, lesser-known landscapes. The big question: How can route planners, regions, and tourism services influence this shift, without displacing the problem? And, just as importantly, how do we change habits and encourage people to venture outside their usual comfort zones? Join us as we navigate these challenges and pave the way for more sustainable, enjoyable outdoor adventures.

1. Be at the forefront of sustainable route innovation
An increasing number of regions are facing growing recreational pressure, with serious consequences for fragile natural environments. The 2026 theme focused on rethinking and rerouting trails to promote a more balanced distribution of cycling and hiking tourism across each area.

2. Learn from best practices and real-world case studies
IBTC brings together destination managers, policymakers, DMOs and route developers from Europe and beyond. Attendees gain hands-on insights from trailblazing projects, marketing trends, and interactive roundtable discussions.

3. Strong opportunities for networking and collaboration
With a curated format including keynote talks, breakout and roundtable sessions, lunch, and networking drinks, the conference fosters meaningful connections with experts in marketing, tourism development, route planning, policy, and entrepreneurship. It’s intimate but diverse, with plenty of chance to build new partnerships.

4. Strategic timing alongside the Fiets en Wandelbeurs (Hike & Bike Experience)
Attendees and exhibitors can seamlessly combine professional learning with access to Europe’s largest consumer fair for cyclists and hikers.
